The program on ‘Orientation of Power & Feminism’ was conducted in Thimi, Bhaktapur on 6th July, 2019 among the community young women leaders formed by Jagaran Nepal. In the presence of Ms. Meena Bista Manager of Jagaran Nepal, Ms. Meena Sharma mentor of CWYL program ,Uttara Nepal Community leaders of Thimi and 10 other young women leaders from the Thimi community. The main objective of this program was to enhance the capacity of young women leaders on the issue of power and feminism.
The program began with an introduction, and Ms. Meena Bista familiarized everyone with the concept of the program. The program then went on to discuss the condition of women in our society today, and their rights in the political, social and economic spheres. Ms. Meena Sharma explained the concept of feminism to the participants. She also addressed homosexuality, Marxism, eco-feminism, inter sectionality, menstruation and how these issues play into shaping feminism. Feminist theory is relevant because it aims to understand the nature of gender inequality while focusing on gender politics, power relations and sexuality. The program also discussed the three waves of feminism; first wave, second wave and the third wave. Ms. Renu Shrestha, who was also present at the program, spoke about the type of power relations that exist in our society and reiterated the importance of feminism in today’s contents.
The program ended on a positive note.
Ms. Preeti Shrestha expressed her gratefulness for being able to be a part of this program. Uttara Nepal, a local resident from Thimi, also gave her personal remarks about why feminism is important. The program concluded with a debate on the issue of feminism. With these types of dialogues taking place, we hope that more people will be talking about gender inequality and doing their part to make this world a better place for women, one in which they have equal rights and opportunities.
